DISCLAIMER: This program is to be used with a word processor that supports
PETASCII code. It works great with THE WRITE STUFF and SpeedScript because
they support the PETASCII mode, even though their default mode is Screen
Code. I know nothing about other word processors so all I can say at this
point is: PLEASE GET THE WRITE STUFF! Life here at the Tower would be so
much simpler if we could depend upon every LOADSTAR subscriber having the
best word processor ever written for the C-64 or C-128. TWS sells for less
than $25 (with many users' groups offering hefty discounts). The bottom
line is: if you don't know whether your word processor supports PETASCII
and will work with INDEXER, we don't either. TWS can be purchased from
Busy Bee Software, P.O. Box 2959, Lompoc CA 93438. See THE ILLUSTRATOR II
review on Side One for more reasons for getting TWS.
Surely you don't think we would publish an ed bell program without 100
or so blocks of documentation? This Read It file is just to give you a
quick overview of INDEXER; the actual docs are in a PETASCII, printed-to-
disk, formatted file called "indexer docs", and yes, it's over 100 blocks
long. It's more than just a docs file; it's a tutorial on many aspects of
printing with your computer.
INDEXER can save you a lot of time and work. ed uses it for creating
an Index and Table of Contents for the extensive docs he writes for his
complex programs. You will probably find it more useful for making an
Index and Table of Contents for your longer writings (your novel? your
Pulitzer Prize-winning essay?). Or you may use it to make some of the
documentation on other LS 128 programs from the past more readable and
handy.
An Index is a list of words or phrases, in alphabetical order, found
at the back of a book or article. The Index shows which pages address the
subject of the word or phrase so you can quickly look them up. The Table
of Contents is a list of "chapter" headings shown at the beginning of the
text with page numbers for quick lookup.
If the text you're indexing is long, you can imagine how much work it
would be to read through it for EACH word in the Index list, compiling page
numbers. INDEXER does it at machine language speed, then creates a
separate file of the Index. The program then gives you the option to print
it out in a nice, easy to read format. It does the same for the Table of
Contents.
The docs for INDEXER are on the disk in PETASCII format, ready to be
read or printed by your word processor, if it allows you to load SEQ
PETASCII files. To load the file with THE WRITE STUFF, do this:
(1) Press CTRL-A for ASCII mode.
(2) Press CTRL-L for Load.
(3) Delete the dash and enter "indexer docs,s,r".
(4) Press CTRL-A after the file has loaded.
(5) Press UP-ARROW then choose PRINT.
(6) Set the left, right, top and bottom margins to 0.
(7) Select SCREEN.
After printing to screen you can send it to the printer by choosing
PRINT, then PRINTER. It will print out a nicely formatted set of
instructions for INDEXER, complete with page numbers and chapter headings.
Once you have printed out the documentation, you will find how to use the
program to make a Table of Contents and Index for the docs. The files
"table of content" and "index" are already on the disk, as is the
"indexer.wordfile" file which was created with TWS. This word file is used
by INDEXER to make the "index" file.
With TWS you can add "table of content" to the front of "indexer docs"
and append "index" to the end, giving you a professional-looking manual for
the program when you print it out.
By the way, the "t." files on LOADSTAR 128 (like the one you're
reading now) are created with TWS and printed to disk in PETASCII format.
The only difference between "t.indexer boot" (this file) and "indexer docs"
is that our files are in the PRG format, formatted for 78 columns, and have
no page numbers at the bottom. We let our Menu System do the formatting as
it's printed. "indexer docs" has page numbers and is formatted for normal
margins.
If you don't have TWS (or a good word processor that you know well)
then you won't have much use for INDEXER anyway.
ed has written a powerful support program for a word processor. It is
NOT a word processer itself, but it is a handy program that LOADSTAR 128 is
proud to present.
